Gush Katif Legacy Center - A Living Testimony to an Extraordinary Zionist Enterprise
The Gush Katif communities pooled their efforts to create the Gush Katif Legacy Center which, in the words of the Government of Israel who approved its establishment in April 2008, “will preserve the spirit of Gush Katif pioneers and express our appreciation for their hard work and dedication." (here it is important to mention that the meaning of the new law is that the GK legacy Center will have the same status as all museums in Israel: the administering of the museum will be secured by a governmental budget, the building of the structure comes from contributions)
In July 2008, the cornerstone was laid for the Documentation Center in Nitzan, a seminal component of the Legacy Center itself.
Designed as a living testimony to the accomplishments, ideology, faith and heritage of Gush Katif, the Center will incorporate:
- a documentation center to incorporate all materials about the settlement enterprise from the country’s public archives and private collections. The center will maintain a main databank. A central feature of this center, will be the massive collection of eyewitness video documentaries. These are personal documentaries from each former Gush Katif family. The Interviews Project is directed by Mordy Kirshner formerly of the Steven Spielberg Holocaust Project.
- a permanent central exhibition hall to serve as the primary showcase. Featured will be exhibitions of topics possessing unique relevance to Gush Katif -- agriculture, settlement, natural environment, archaeology, history, defense, faith and achievement, the evacuation and vision for the future.
- library and study center with easy accessibility for journalists, academicians, historians, researchers, students and others.
- auditorium-lecture hall to host special programming for students, youth and adults from Israel and overseas.
In addition, the Center will:
- publish books and albums including the cataloguing of all books and publications published to date, and written by Gush Katif evacuees or written about Gush Katif.
- maintain a website
- conduct nationwide programming activities
The Gush Katif Legacy Center will enable the nation of Israel to preserve the memories of a life that personified Zionism.
